Serve Up - New Orleans 2014

Dear Friends & Family,

As a freshman here at the University of Maine Farmington I have blessed with countless new opportunities. This year I am going on a trip during February Break. Not only am I going, but my awesome roommate Denise Labrecque will be going as well. Together we have decided to lean on one another in fundraising and support. Having both traveled to Los Anonos, Costa Rica with our local church we share a common passion, loving and helping those who are in need. Mark 12:31 reads, "Love your neighbor as yourself." Whether it is 10,000 miles or 500 feet down the road we all can take part in the shaping and changing of this world.

This is an amazing opportunity and we are both looking forward to it. The trip is through InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, which is the Christian fellowship group in colleges throughout New England. The trip I will be going on is called Serve-Up, New Orleans. The goal of the trip is to bring support to those suffering from poverty, and to rebuild some of the areas that have yet to recover from the devastating Hurricane Katrina that brought so much pain to the city 7 years ago. Unfortunately, it is thought that it will take another 14 years before the city is completely rebuilt, and our goal is to go down and aid in this process. The trip will take place from February 14-23.

The trip has a few purposes. First, we will help with the rebuilding of houses and community buildings. Second, we will be hearing the stories of those that were affected by the hurricane. Also, we will be learning about the natural disaster and human failures associated with the devastation of New Orleans. Evenings will be spent talking about the intersections of social justice and faith and how that affects the way we live.

The trip will cost a total of $600 a person and that will cover sleeping and travel arrangements as well as most of the food.

If you are interested in sponsoring me or helping the group as a whole, please let me know by emailing me at mariahdufour@gmail.com or calling me at 207-576-0860. Checks can be made out in support of me individually and can be made payable to me so that I can send one complete check to InterVarsity or if you would like a tax deductible receipt, or to donate to the group as a whole, checks can be made out to InterVarsity. In either instance,  send checks to:

Learning to CLING

At first I gave my life to God during a time of deep grief.  I needed a reason to believe there was something bigger and stronger than the pain I was feeling. As time went on I continued in my "faith."  When times were good I praised Him. In times of pain I questioned him, yet I never truly felt the same as the night I first surrendered to Him. It seemed through the ups and downs I began to slowly drift away. It wasn't util I stepped out of my comfort zone and saw how others all around the world were worshipping the same God that I began to question my faith.  My seemingly solid faith. It seemed their priorities were every different than mine. When I struggled to go to church once a week, they managed to go every night. When we were called to open our bibles, I flipped to the table of contents while others were already finished reciting the verse.  Their commitment was far greater than mine.  Their willingness to surrender came with willing hearts. How ...

The Power of a Smile

Stop correcting "i"The smell of burnt coffee beans fills the air. I can hear buzzes of cellphones, murmurs of friends talking in line- and the occasional whoosh of the expresso machine. As I look out the small coffee shop window I see a diverse city, a puzzle of God's wonderful creation. This week I have had the opportunity to connect with many people, all in different part of their life.  Conversations have ranged from embarrassing subway stories, to struggles within the health care system, to future hopes and dreams.  I answered the question, 'Where is Maine?" so many times this week I can not keep count.  We are currently partnering with the Salvation Army in Harlem, New York. During the day we help at a food kitchen- mainly creating relationships with the community; loving them and praying for them.  In the afternoons I help in a classroom of 1st graders, their teacher being another young college student. She is currently in school to be a lawyer...

Dance Party Ice Breakers

I'm currently sitting in a hot van, on my way down the windy mountainside. I haven't been able to sit down and right a thoughtful well written blog so please excuse my scattered rambles.  The more we settle into Jamaica the more we have been able to gain valuable relationships in the community. Unlike other mission trips where you come and do a lot of manual labor, we are here for an extended period of time. This gives us the opportunity to truly get to know the community, build relationships and share about Jesus in a way that we would be unable to do with a strict schedule.  This being said, it isn't always easy. Coming from a culture that is very goal oriented, progress driven, and strict with time has created a deeply embedded go go go mentality. It's as though my internal clock is having to be re-wired. This has made it especially difficult at times when we're being called to just sit in relationship, in the presence of God.  I'd love to sit he...
