Serve Up - New Orleans 2014

Dear Friends & Family,

As a freshman here at the University of Maine Farmington I have blessed with countless new opportunities. This year I am going on a trip during February Break. Not only am I going, but my awesome roommate Denise Labrecque will be going as well. Together we have decided to lean on one another in fundraising and support. Having both traveled to Los Anonos, Costa Rica with our local church we share a common passion, loving and helping those who are in need. Mark 12:31 reads, "Love your neighbor as yourself." Whether it is 10,000 miles or 500 feet down the road we all can take part in the shaping and changing of this world.

This is an amazing opportunity and we are both looking forward to it. The trip is through InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, which is the Christian fellowship group in colleges throughout New England. The trip I will be going on is called Serve-Up, New Orleans. The goal of the trip is to bring support to those suffering from poverty, and to rebuild some of the areas that have yet to recover from the devastating Hurricane Katrina that brought so much pain to the city 7 years ago. Unfortunately, it is thought that it will take another 14 years before the city is completely rebuilt, and our goal is to go down and aid in this process. The trip will take place from February 14-23.

The trip has a few purposes. First, we will help with the rebuilding of houses and community buildings. Second, we will be hearing the stories of those that were affected by the hurricane. Also, we will be learning about the natural disaster and human failures associated with the devastation of New Orleans. Evenings will be spent talking about the intersections of social justice and faith and how that affects the way we live.

The trip will cost a total of $600 a person and that will cover sleeping and travel arrangements as well as most of the food.

If you are interested in sponsoring me or helping the group as a whole, please let me know by emailing me at mariahdufour@gmail.com or calling me at 207-576-0860. Checks can be made out in support of me individually and can be made payable to me so that I can send one complete check to InterVarsity or if you would like a tax deductible receipt, or to donate to the group as a whole, checks can be made out to InterVarsity. In either instance,  send checks to:

Hello again! Long time no talk?

Updating my blog often is not as habitual as I would like, however here I am given a quick catch up.  On June 8th, 2014 I graduated from Poland Regional High school and let me just say it was quite a relief to finally be done these last four years.  It was like that of a marathon, the last leg of the race that seemed to continue on forever. I'd been impatient with life for who knew where I was going, or where the heck I'd even end up.  The last month of high school was one of the most challenging, but with a few close friends tightly by my side I made it through.             "Don't wish away high school, when you're finished you'll want to go back. Experience it all."  Advice I heard continuously from elders, much wiser for a reason.  Yet as I finished my last real day of high school emotions ran high.  Four years of ups and downs, highs and lows that seemed to feel like a r...
This last week was spent in Indiana training with Experience Mission. First off Fort Wayne Indiana is beautiful and I could totally see myself returning at some point. The training was not only essential before leaving but has already given me the opportunity to be challenged in new ways. Whether it was learning about cross cultural differences or acknowledging topics such as hope and dignity it was needed. This was also the first time I met my team, and already it is clear God is at work. We're all coming from very different places, but with a common compassion of wanting to be there to help others and individually grow. It is so easy in a materialistic world were resources can be abundant and we are taught to pick up our phones to complain before even trying to independently problem solve. God far too often takes the back burner. Being able to leave with little communication and limited resources will give us the room to grow in areas in our lives we may have previously been un...

Flat Stanley Presentation By: Lilly Gelinas

So so proud of Lilly for presenting such a great project. Back in April she asked me to take Flat Stanley along with me to Costa Rica. Today was the day she has been waiting for! Not only did she learn a great deal, but she also blessed me so much! She shared about Flat Stanley's journey from the animals he saw, and what it was living living in a small community. The best story of all though was when she shared how Jesus had healed an elderly lady in the streets of San Jose who suffered for years with knee pain. This girl rocked her project, literally out of America! #suchajoy
